Choosing the right builder for you

Choosing a builder can be a minefield with so many construction companies offering low prices and high quality builds. There are many factors to consider when selecting your builder so how can you be sure that you choose the best company for you?

We have spoken to Steven Parsons, Director of Hampshire based Rockbourne Homes, to gain his professional opinion. His has provided us with the following tips on selecting a builder for your home project:

1. One of the first and most important things for you to do is plan your project. Know what you want before you speak to a builder to ensure that you receive an accurate quote and can establish the timescale of the work.

2. Research the builders you are considering. Ensure that your builder is a member of one of the highly regarded trade associations such as NHBC or Zurich. The criteria are very strict to join the associations so a member company will be reputable and will offer a quality finished product.

3. Ask for references and details of previous projects that the builder has completed. A strong project portfolio is essential; you will also be able to see if the builder tailors the projects specifically to the needs of the client.

4. A quality builder will have a customer service policy in place ensuring, you receive all necessary documentation after the build is completed and will be available to come back to make any minor alterations if required.

5. It is best to choose a builder who is familiar with your area. They will be able to locally source materials which will compliment your surroundings. And they have no excuses not to turn up on time!

6. When negotiating costs and the small print ensure that you agree a payment structure that suits you and always ensure that the builder is fully covered with insurance.

7. Lastly, do you get on with the team and the company? If you can develop a good rapport with the builders then it will make communication on the project much easier.
